Standing in front of the mirror, gazing right through it, I look up for all the reflection on years passed. Last few years where I didn’t take care of myself much. I can see the premature greying of the hair and the exhausted face. I recall the conversation that I had with one of my friends last week. She talked about a herb Yashtimadhu that has done wonders to her. Yashtimadhu is also known as Mulethi or Licorice. I was aware that Yashtimadhu (Liquorice) is used in various cosmetics but wanted to know more about it.

I rushed out of the room to get my phone. And from there starts the search for this mysterious herb.

Upon thoroughly checking up the herb, I found that it is quite a miraculous one. It is one herb that can be used for a wide variety of conditions. Packed with numerous health benefits, Yashtimadhu is an anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and an antioxidant. If taking the correct dose, it gives amazing health, skin and hair benefits.

Below are the listed five benefits of Yashtimadhu

Yashtimadhu for hairfall:

As Yashtimadhu (Mulethi/Liquorice) is packed with flavonoids, which improves the overall health of the scalp, it is best known to treat hair fall problems.

As per Ayurveda, the main reason for hair fall is due to an imbalance of Pitta energy in the body. One should reduce the consumption of hot, sour and spicy food to balance Pitta. However, Yashtimadhu helps a bit further.

It balances both Vasha and Pitta doshas in the body and in addition to this it also soothes any scalp irritation or infections.

Helps to cure Respiratory & Digestive Disorders

Yashtmadhu helps to cure and provide ease to respiratory conditions like asthma, bronchitis, chest congestion and a sore throat.

Did you know that in the olden days, singers use to chew Yashtinadhu (Mulethi) to clear their throat and voice! I have seen my mom chewing it too, to clear her throat, she has a degree of Masters in vocal singing and uses to practise in the morning back then.

Yashtimadhu is also a champ to treat acidic diseases and reduces irritation and discomfort in the stomach due to high acidic levels.

It also helps with indigestion, bloating, diarrhoea and other digestive disorders.

Furthermore, upon research, I found that ulcer healing is the most common characteristic of Yashtimadhu.

Helps weight management

If low weight or emaciation is bothering you, then Yashtimadhu can help gain those extra pounds.

Real Obesity is a medical concern which can happen at any age and should not be taken lightly. However, the opposite condition of Obesity is emaciation (anorexia) which is the state of being abnormally thin or weak.

Yashtimadhu (Liquorice) powder in milk can help build immunity and treat emaciation.

As Yashtimadhu (Liquorice) is known for its anti-inflammatory benefits, it is highly used for skin conditions like Psoriasis and eczema. It also eases any inflammation on the skin.

Relieves stress and Anxiety

This traditional Ayurvedic herb helps relieve stress & anxiety. It controls stress hormones if taken in your diet daily.

The antioxidants and flavonoids that are present in the root of the liquorice help to attain calmness and also improves the power of the memory.

As we all can read above that Yashtimadhu is packed with innumerable health benefits. I can’t wait to try some of the recipes I gathered online and enjoy the benefits of this beautiful traditional herb.
